FIU Debate Team continues winning streak in 2016

The FIU Debate Team started off the spring semester strong with another impressive showing at the 6th Knights’ Parli Joust in Cocoa, Florida in February. The FIU Debate Team won in two categories: the top performance Award, second place, and third place awards in Parli showings. Additionally, the members of the debate team came home with several top speaker awards.

The tournament, hosted by the University of Central Florida Speech Team, featured varsity National Parliamentary Debate Association (NPDA) competitions. Several schools across Florida competed for first. Katia Florit and Abdel Reyes took the top prize in the Parli open competition, where contestants debated on policy topics selected from The Orlando Sentinel and the New York Times.

The advanced rounds used ethics-based value topics related to contemporary public policy issues. Roman Viveros and Juan Salamanca took the third place prize in Parli open completion. Katia Florit and Juan Salamanca, both impressed the judges and were awarded second and third place speakers in the tournament.

The FIU Debate Team, housed in the Communication Arts Department, is a student group with a presence on both the MMC and BBC campuses. The team focuses on the importance of fostering public debate and public deliberation. Over the last 12 years, the FIU Debate Team has represented the university in collegiate competitions in a variety of public debate styles, which include parliamentary, British Parliamentary, and IPDA. It has grown exponentially, with students joining each year.
