Sally Guzik, a FIU School of Communication alumna, serves as the President of a national economic and community development consulting firm called Fourth Economy that helps communities and organizations create strategic, equitable, and resilient futures.

Long before she was leading large-scale economic and community development, Guzik was learning how strategic communication shapes real-world impact. She continues to use her master’s degree in Mass Communication – Global Strategic Communication from FIU to actively build a career rooted in community impact and tells us all about her leadership journey.

Guzik shares that her work has always lived in some version of “complexity,” working across different sectors and cultures.  There was never one clear answer to any situation. Which is why her love for learning and desire to understand the communities she was serving better led her to pursue a second master’s degree in Global Strategic Communications at FIU. This was a decision that significantly influenced her leadership style.

She emphasizes the importance of communication in organizations and how it often goes unrecognized as a leadership role.

Guzik shared a project in Central New York in which Fourth Economy conducted a seven-county assessment and developed a community engagement strategy to identify community needs, both now and in the future. The consulting firm supported the largest investment in New York history, which includes the establishment of a semiconductor facility expected to create thousands of jobs and significantly expand the workforce. Their assessment ensured that, as the population grows, surrounding communities are well supported.

More recently, Fourth Economy’s work in Florida has focused on community-centered solutions closer to home. In Jacksonville, the firm partnered with LISC on a multi-phase effort to preserve homeownership and family wealth in majority-Black neighborhoods. This work addressed heirs’ property issues through data analysis, targeted outreach, and the development of a new lending product designed specifically for fractionalized ownership.

As Fourth Economy continues to expand its footprint, Guzik shared that the firm is actively growing across South Florida.

“We are actively growing our footprint across South Florida and expect more work in that region moving forward.”

Guzik’s educational background provides helpful insight when creating sustainable solutions. Not only is it important to have information that is true and accurate, but the way the data is presented should be prioritized through strong communication.

“You must be a strong communicator to be able to know what the important data is. How do I communicate effectively? How is it going to be used? How is it not going to be traumatic to somebody? How is it not going to be harmful to them? How can it be helpful?”

Her education has significantly influenced how she leads organizations, particularly in keeping her team aligned and strategic through consistent communication that delivers valuable results for high-level stakeholders. Her goal is always to create clarity and alignment while building trust and collaboration among people who have different priorities but also different scales of power.

“I think global communications really gave me the tools to frame issues and that way responsibly, to navigate like a cultural context and communicate with intention in high-stakes settings.”

For current FIU students, Guzik encourages them to stay curious and find ways to be both collaborative and innovative, especially in a university that gives them the opportunity to work alongside so many international students. She encourages students to go for those leadership positions even if that means going outside of MarCom.

“Communications professionals need to be in leadership positions, because good communicators are really at the center of good leadership.”
