In an era of rapid technological shifts and global complexity, the role of an educator extends far beyond the classroom. At the 2025 Florida International University Faculty Convocation, the university community gathered to celebrate those who embody this higher calling. Among the distinguished honorees was Professor Albena Petrus, from the School of Communication within the College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts (CARTA), who teaches in the Global Strategic Communication-Creative Track every Spring, and was presented with the Faculty Senate Award for Excellence in Adjunct Teaching.

The award recognizes Professor Petrus’s outstanding commitment to her students and her visionary approach to pedagogy. At the heart of her teaching philosophy is a singular goal: cultivating adaptable learners who are prepared to thrive in a changing world.

A Vision for Lifelong Learning

Professor Petrus’s impact is felt most strongly in the way she prepares her students for life after graduation. In the School of Communication—a field defined by constant evolution—she emphasizes critical thinking and the development of a “lifelong learner” mindset. By doing so, she ensures her students are not just mastering current tools but are also developing the mental agility required to navigate the complexities of an ever-evolving professional landscape.

Active and Engaged Classrooms

Colleagues and students alike praise Professor Petrus for creating dynamic, student-centered environments. Rather than passive lecture halls, her classrooms are spaces where learning is active, relevant, and deeply engaging.

The Faculty Senate highlighted her unique ability to balance the “need for structure and flexibility.” This balance allows students to feel supported by a clear framework while having the freedom to explore their own creative and intellectual boundaries.

Fostering Ownership

Perhaps the most transformative aspect of Professor Petrus’s teaching is her focus on intrinsic motivation. By fostering a sense of ownership in her students, she shifts the focus from simply earning a grade to valuing the learning process itself. This approach fuels a deeper level of engagement, turning students into active participants in their own education.

As FIU continues to cement its reputation as a leader in student success and innovation, educators like Professor Petrus serve as the backbone of the institution. Her recognition at the Faculty Convocation is a testament to her dedication, her passion for communication, and her unwavering belief in the potential of every student she teaches.
