Optimal’s Guide to Online Schools list independently researches more than 30,000 online degrees to find the top universities offering the lowest tuitions and the best outcomes for students. Its Best Online Colleges list highlights the 25 best value accredited colleges offering online bachelor’s degrees in communication based on out-of-state tuition rates and median salary levels. OnlineU showcases the most affordable online degrees in the country across a variety of popular subjects. Every degree is from an accredited school, and annual tuitions start below $4,000. Alumni salaries were provided by PayScale and reflect earnings for 10 or more years after graduation. The purpose of these lists is for readers to learn the return on investment of a specific degree and major before making a decision, which will allow them to evade insurmountable debt.

“We are very proud of this important recognition,” said Aileen Izquierdo, FIU Department of Communication interim chair. “In only a few short years, our fully online programs have grown, providing increasing opportunities to the communication leaders of tomorrow. As the communication industry evolves, we remain committed providing to our students the best educational opportunities, so that they may be as prepared as possible to thrive in their career endeavors.”

To be considered for the Best Online Colleges and Most Affordable Colleges lists, universities need to fit the following criteria:

  • Overall list: They must offer at least 10 fully online degrees at the bachelor’s and/or master’s level with programs that cover at least five subject areas.
  • Bachelor’s list: They must offer at least five fully online degrees at the bachelor’s level with programs that cover at least three subject areas.
  • Master’s list: They must offer at least five fully online degrees at the master’s level with programs that cover at least three subject areas.

“Enrolling into a fully online program gave me the flexibility to work while I finish my degree,” said online communication arts student, Vanessa Sanchez. “I don’t have to worry about finding a class the works with my schedule; instead, I am able to manage my own class schedule.” The goal of Optimal’s research is to show data that is challenging to find through basic online searches. Webgoers can view the average amount of money spent on a specific online program and a reasonable expectation of a salary earned after 10 years of graduation in order to make an educated decision about their future educations.
