The CommArts Studio collaborated with the College of Business Administration to prepare students for the FIU auditions for the 2013 ENACTUS regional competition held in Atlanta, GA.

This competition allows students to showcase their community engagement. Eligible service projects must feature collaboration and promote independence, helping people by providing them with the tools to help themselves. The goal of the program, said finance professor and faculty advisor Deanne Butchey, is to encourage students to use entrepreneurial skills to “think outside the box” and develop sustainable solutions for communities in need.

The FIU team, representing a number of different projects, presented in Atlanta on April 2, 2013. More than 40 teams participated from Georgia, Florida, Kentucky and Tennessee. After presenting the students’ projects, FIU ENACTUS was named an ENACTUS Regional Champion in one of the 8 existing leagues.

The CommArts Studio worked closely with the students to help prepare their presentations. Studio director Char Eberly praised the students and her staff: “The students had such great projects, really innovative ideas for helping others in ways that could continue once the projects ended. Our communication coordinators worked hard to channel the students enthusiasm and creativity into smooth, professional presentations that showcased that passion. Then we sent them off with the time-tested tip: practice, practice, practice. They did and it showed.”

The team now advances to the 2013 U.S. National Enactus Exposition, which will be held in Kansas City, Missouri in May.

Congratulations to FIU student champions Estela Lewin, Kyrsten Alvarez-Basulto, Laura Osorio, Jocelyn Benitez, Dennis Gibson and Lureida Soto. We wish them good luck at the Nationals!
