Steven McDuffie, a Senior Communication Arts student at FIU, was recently elected Chairman of the Florida Federation of College Republicans.
After several rounds of close votes, the State chairs elected McDuffie by an 8-5 margin over his opponent. He has already been sworn in to office, and has begun his term as Florida Chairman. This is the first time in 7 years that a FIU student has been elected State Chairman.
McDuffie will hold several high-profile meetings with Republican leaders like John Boehner, Eric Cantor, former Florida governor Jeb Bush, and current governor Rick Scott, among others. He is also the first Florida delegate that will vote in the College Republican National Convention that will be held in Washington, D.C. over the summer.
McDuffie attributes his election win to the communication skills he has developed in his major. “Communication Arts has taught me how to be the effective leader and communicator that I had always wanted to be.”
The Florida Federation of College Republicans is a subdivision of the College Republicans National Committee (CRNC). Its webpage states that this body is the “nationally elected voice for young conservatives across the country,” which “drives and defines the debate for College Republicans and brings youth-oriented issues to the forefront of the political discourse.”
The organization has a nationally elected chairman and officers who operate out of the CRNC headquarters in Washington, D.C. Moreover, “each state maintains its own federation with a state Chairman and a leadership committee who work directly with the National Committee.”
