The College of Communication Architecture + The Arts’s School of Communication + Journalism (SCJ) celebrated the official opening of the SCJ Media Hub at the FIU Biscayne Bay Campus (AC2 130) on Monday, October 1. The Media Hub comprises the student-run, faculty-led South Florida Media Network and BOLD Strategic Communication Agency. The ceremonies kicked off with an introduction to the event by Jefferson Noel, FIU Biscayne Bay Campus SGA President, who introduced Brian Schriner, dean of the College of Communication, Architecture, and the Arts (CARTA).

“CARTA works collaboratively with the faculty to enhance the school’s curriculum by creating additional opportunities for experiential learning and providing increased opportunities to produce and edit content that will propel our students and faculty forward,” said Brian Schriner, dean of CARTA.

The event showcased the state-of-the art spaces and included a ribbon cutting ceremony, reception, and tours. Student association and club representatives that included BOLD communications agency, Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ), and Lambda Pi Eta (LPH) Communication Honor Society featured current projects and past accomplishments.

“We’re creating the opportunity for our students to be the first among many to create narratives that are impactful, that move the ‘needle’, and help transform our society in a positive way,” said Mark B. Rosenberg, president of FIU to guests which included board members, partners, faculty, staff, and students.

After the ribbon cutting ceremony and presentations, guests were welcomed to tour the nearly 5,000 square foot Media Hub. The future holds even more growth for SCJ’s facilities. Plans include renovations to the Broadcast Studio as well as the creation of iSTAR, an immersive studio which will provide students with vital career training in the creation of virtual reality and augmented reality as well as mentorship and internship opportunities.
