The applications to the Jorge Herrera Memorial Scholarship Fund are now open for all eligible FIU Debate Team members.
This is a one-time scholarship that will be given to two deserving Debate Team members who have demonstrated leadership on the FIU Debate Team, and who have taken an active role in its administration. The Coach of the FIU Debate Team, the Chair of the Communication Arts Department, and the wife of Jorge Herrera will select the winners of the $250 prize.
To be eligible a student needs to have competed in at least three debate tournaments, have demonstrated promise for competitive success, and have demonstrated student leadership to the team and greater South Florida community.

Application requirements:
– Completed application form.
– Application Cover Letter, addressed to the FIU Debate Coach and the Chair of the Communication Arts Department. The letter should contain a brief explanation of the applicant’s career goals and biographical information.
– One letter of recommendation from an employer, faculty, or individual with significant knowledge of the applicant’s experience and involvement in community service.
– Current resume.
-Personal Essay. In the essay, please answer the questions posed on the form. Limit answers to 300 words.
The deadline to apply for this scholarship is March 25, 2013. Please email the completed application to commarts@fiu.edu. Incomplete applications will not be considered. The candidates will be notified by email by April 8th, 2013 about the status of their submission.
