The new Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) opened to the public on Wednesday, December 4th. What was once the Miami Art Museum in the Government Center area is now the newly designed facility that resides on Biscayne Bay at Museum Park (formerly Bicentennial Park). The Pérez Art Museum Miami building is designed by internationally renowned and Pritzker Prize-winning architects Herzog & de Meruon. They are known for projects such as the Blue House in Oberwil, Switzerland, the Beijing National Stadium (also known as the Bird’s Nest), and 1111 Lincoln Road.
The new museum provides 200,000 square feet for exhibition space, an auditorium, dining, and leisure. On the exterior of the building are “hanging gardens” – columns of flora that are suspended from the beams of the roof, designed by the inventor of the Vertical Garden, Patrick Blanc. Also, the exterior offers much space to walk and enjoy the view of Biscayne Bay. Inside of the museum, visitors experience the openness provided by large windows, which let in much natural sunlight. A lecture room and expansive auditorium connect the first floor to the second. Both floors house vast gallery rooms, some of which show the view of the waterfront and let in the sunlight.
The Pérez Art Museum Miami, designed by prominent architects and serving as a sophisticated artistic and educational institution, is an important addition to Miami-Dade County. It will be joined by its neighbor, the Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science, in 2015. Combined, the art and science museums in the new Museum Park will be sure to attract locals and future tourists.
