Ashley Garner will graduate from the College of Architecture + The Arts this Fall 2013 with both a Bachelor of Arts in Art History and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art. Recently, the Art + Art History student had her work featured in Quiescent Magazine, and has exhibited at GAB Studio Art Gallery.
Some of Garner’s work was published in the October 2013 issue of Quiescent Magazine, which is made available on a platform viewed by about 70 million people every month. She uses photography as her medium, and manipulates her photographs to create stunning effects and emotional implications. Garner’s feature in Quiescent Magazine can be viewed by clicking here and turning to pages 34-39. Additionally, Garner has recently exhibited at GAB Studio Art Gallery. The exhibition of collaborative work by Garner and artist Brian Buzzella opened during Art Walk on Saturday, October 12th. Buzzella, who had contacted Garner and expressed interest in her work through social media, took prints of Garner’s photographic work and painted on top of them with oil paints, acrylics, and pastel sticks. “Although our styles are very different,” said Garner, “ what I really love about [Buzzella’s] work is that he will go in after he finishes a painting and add to it, or maybe completely paint over it based off of how time has affected his initial feeling of when he started the work.” Garner said that she goes through a similar process with her own photography. “…[A]fter a certain amount of time I will go back and add layers to the photograph that are meant to express how I was feeling or do feel now about that moment.”
As Garner graduates from FIU, she reflects on her entrance into the professional art world. She said, “[It] is very different [from] art school. There’s no faculty to tell you what’s right or what’s wrong; what to say or what not to say. At the end of the day, all that really matters is how you feel about your work. That took me a long time to figure out.”
