“I’m extremely grateful for having received the Coconut Grove Arts Festival scholarship,” said Chantae Wright. “This will give me the opportunity to expand on work that caters to communal ideologies that speak to Miami.”

The Department of Art + Art History continues to grow in its engagement with the South Florida art community through its partnership with the Coconut Grove Arts Festival (CGAF) – offering scholarships and mentoring opportunities to engage with CGAF artists during the festival. Students shadow and assist the artists for hands-on experience and mentoring as part of one of the largest and most acclaimed art festivals in the nation.

“The Coconut Grove Arts Festival is more than just a three-day event,” said CGAF Chairman Dave Hill. “We actively encourage young artists to become professional artists through our scholarship, visiting artist, and emerging artist programs. We believe in giving back to our community.”

Established through the partnership between CGAF and FIU’s CARTA, the Coconut Grove Arts Festival Visual Arts Scholarship Fund continues to strengthen the bond between academia and South Florida’s thriving creative economy.

“It is, without a doubt, a great pleasure and privilege to be able to help young artists take a step towards achieving their dream,” said CGAF board member Marshall Steingold.

Both undergraduate and graduate students received the award and were recognized at a special ceremony held in the Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum. The second cohort of recipients are:

  • Tijonne Allen (BFA – Art)
  • Nicole Miranda Rosario (BA – Art / Accelerated MS)
  • Alexandra Breaux (MFA – Visual Arts)
  • Alexandra Berlin (MFA – Visual Arts)

  • Jacob Stiltner (MFA – Visual Arts)
  • Lucia Morales (MFA – Visual Arts)
  • Mark Herrera (MFA – Visual Arts)

Beginning in 2023, scholarships have been awarded to students by a jury review of their submitted artwork, with a maximum of 10 students being awarded each year through 2025.
