FIU Art + Art History alumna Jillian Mayer ’07 (BFA) ix exhibiting her work in Self-Proliferation, an exhibition at Girls’ Club in Fort Lauderdale.
Organized by New York-based independent curator Micaela Giovannotti, Self-Proliferation is a response to the renewed interest in artist prints, editions, books and other multiples. It is an exhibition of works by more than thirty artists from the collection of Francie Bishop Good and David Horvitz. The works in the exhibition express the natural female propensity for replication and fecundity. The majority of the works are created as multiples – artist books, prints, photographs, videos. They manifest the fungible nature of contemporary art production and collection today, and exhibit an easy familiarity with technology. The supremacy of the original masterwork is sidestepped in favor of a more accessible and, at the same time, more radical awareness of the artwork within the marketplace. (Source: Girls’ Club)
An international, cross-generational selection of artists reflect upon the nuances of the female “self” as constructed or inspired by cinema and pop culture, printed media and fashion, feminist notions, racial politics, cultural traditions and personal concerns. Landscape exists as a self-referent, a zone for projections of feminine identity. The multi-tasking and innate reproductive nature of female existence provides the creative engine for the works on view. Duality, doubling, mirroring, splintering the one into the many – these themes define the status of female lives today. (Source: Girls’ Club)

In addition to exhibiting in Self-Proliferation, Jillian Mayer is participating in Girls’ Club Artists in Action! 2016 program. Artists in Action! is a 4-part presentation series at Girls’ Club, where prominent local artists offer a glimpse into their unique methods of art-making. For this year’s Artists in Action! program, Mayer and three other presenting artists from Self-Proliferation were chosen; these four individuals work with diverse media, employing various printing and proliferation techniques to carry their message. At Artists in Action! talks, artists share their inspirations, career paths and “ah hah!” moments with the public. At each event, Girls’ Club releases a limited edition multiple for sale, under $100. This is an opportunity for budding art collectors to own one copy of a signed, limited edition work, published by Girls’ Club. (Source: Girls’ Club)
