Deering Estate at Cutler is one of Miami’s hidden treasures. It is an environmental, archeological and historical preserve, as well as a cultural and educational facility. The site offers guided nature hikes, daily tours of the historic houses, canoe trips and tons of other activities and events.
Deering Estate has also become a thriving cultural art center. Our very own Kim Yantis coordinates exhibit and cultural arts planning and programming, the multi-tiered Artist in Residence Program, and curates 2 exhibits a year. Yantis received her MFA (Master of Fine Arts) degree from FIU in printmaking and mixed media in 2010 and was awarded a one year Artist Residency at the Deering Estate soon after. She then began working for Deering Estate in early 2011. Yantis remains a practicing visual artist and stays engaged with Miami-Dade, Broward and National Arts Organizations.
The Artist in Residency program welcomes professional Visual, Performing, and Literary Artists who are self-motivated and focused. Both Artist in Residence Studio Residencies and Non-Studio Project Residencies are available and are competitively selected through a jury process using leading professionals from our family of galleries, collaborative arts and cultural organizations. The Residency is a wonderful opportunity for artists to foster creative ideas, unique experiences, and collaborative opportunities that engage the public. Several current and former artists who received these residencies are FIU alumni.
There are currently three exhibits on display at the Deering Estate. “Imprinted” by Marina Font and “The Nature of Things” by Antonia Wright will be on display until April 23 and “Between Sea and Sky: Dreams of a Visionary” by Patricia Gonzalez-Osorio will be on display until April 26. They are all very lovely to view in person and it is interesting to see how they are presented since the walls cannot be pierced or drilled into.
