College of Architecture + The Arts alumni Richard LaBarbera (BFA ’02) and Jillian Mayer (BFA ’07), along with artist Ben Morey, have received the South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship for 2014.

Three Broward County artists have been named as recipients of the 2014 South Florida Cultural Consortium Visual and Media Artists Fellowships. Richard LaBarbera ($15,000) – Photography; Jillian Mayer ($15,000) – Video; and Ben Morey ($15,000) Mixed Media were recently selected to receive this esteemed, five-county artist fellowship. This year’s selection is from a record-breaking group of more than 310 applicants. In total, 13 fellowships were awarded in the five-county area – Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade, Monroe and Martin counties.
The recipients were selected during a two-tier panel process which included the participation of regional and national arts experts. The 2014 regional panel, whose selections are conducted anonymously and based solely on the evaluation of the artists’ work as evidenced by samples submitted, included: Adler Guerrier, 2013 SFCC Fellowship Recipient (Miami-Dade); Maria Elena Ortiz, Curatorial Assistant, Perez Art Museum Miami (Miami-Dade); Marisa Pascucci, Curator of 29th Century & Contemporary Art, Boca Museum of Art (Palm Beach); Jane Hart, Curator, Art and Culture Center of Hollywood (Broward); Christina Petterson, 2012 SFCC Fellowship recipient (Broward); and Amanda Sanfilippo, Curator/Director of Development, Locust Projects (Miami-Dade).
The submissions selected by the regional panel were forwarded for final adjudication and selection to the national panel comprised of: Jarrett Earnest, art historian, writer and co-director of the 1:1 arts space in New York, NY; Tumelo Mosaka, Contemporary Art Curator at the Krannert Art Museum in Champaign-Urbana, IL; and Cassie Thornton, artist from Oakland, CA.
A juried exhibition featuring the works of the 13 South Florida regional recipients is scheduled to be presented at the Bass Museum of Art, 2100 Collins Avenue in Miami Beach in January 2015.
The South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship for Visual and Media Artists is a cooperative project funded in part with the support of the boards of County Commissioners of Broward, Miami-Dade, Martin and Monroe counties and the Palm Beach County Cultural Council.
