At the FIU Photography Gallery at FIU’s Biscayne Bay Campus, Jesus Petroccini’s work is being shown in the exhibition “Jesus Walked on the Wild Side,” starting Thursday, March 19th.
To describe the theme behind this exhibition, Petroccini presents the following statement:
“Jesus Walked on the Wild Side” is a collection of photographs that are the result of my curiosity with the act of “seeing” and the questioning of the world that surrounds me. Simple objects and mundane spaces occupy the photographs, representing what may be viewed as quiet and introspective moments in one’s life. As I simultaneously remove myself from the images and yet submerge myself in the photographic practice, the pictures seem to grapple with what it means to be an American that was born in another country. The underlying tone of the work is in the beauty of the ordinary, the poetry in what most people pass by without a second glance.
Jesus Petroccini was born in Caracas, Venezuela, and he was raised from the age of twelve in South Florida, where he currently resides. Jesus spent the early part of his career in the United States Air Force specializing in dentistry. After serving his country for five years, he then attained a Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing with a minor in Fine Arts at Florida International University. During the last year of his undergraduate studies, he interned at the Dina Mitrani Gallery, where Jesus had the opportunity to co-curate the photography exhibition “Freshly Squeezed,” a group show of emerging South Florida photographers. Jesus’ own artistic endeavors focus on the understanding and perception of photography as a fine art medium.
“Jesus Walked on the Wild Side” will run from March 19th to April 16th, 2015 at the FIU Photography Gallery: 3000 NE 145 Street, Academic II – Room #105, North Miami, FL 33181. Gallery Hours: Monday through Thursday, 11AM – 4PM.
The FIU Photography Gallery – and this exhibition – is directed by Eduardo del Valle and Mirta Gómez, professors of photography at the Art + Art History Department.
