The National Association of Art Education (NAEA) has just announced that alumna Mabel Morales is the recipient of the United States Southeastern Region Supervision/Administration Art Educator Award. The award will be presented during the 2018 NAEA National Convention in Seattle, WA, on March 22, 2018.

The NAEA Awards Program aims to bring public awareness and recognition of outstanding art educators from all divisions and regions in the United States. Morales (FIU BS, MS in Art Education) was honored with the Supervision/Administration of her region.

“As an Arts Administrator for Miami-Dade County Public Schools and a graduate of Florida International University, the power of the visual arts in developing human potential has always been at the forefront of my educational practices. The arts develop student intelligence, build self-esteem, and cultivate empathy, these in itself are powerful tools in the teaching, leading and learning in the field of art education.  As the wise Elliot Eisner would say, art educators help students build recognition, perception, sensitivity, imagination, and integration skills needed to make sense of the world around them (Eisner, 2002).”  As a teacher, leader, and learner I’m a firm believer in encouraging life-long learning and the continuous development of young minds education through the visual arts so they embrace a powerful and diverse view of the world,” said Morales.

Additionally, this fall the following Art Education alumni have received top professional honors both locally and statewide:
