College of Architecture + The Arts’ AdrienneRose Gionta, MFA Candidate and Harumi Abe (MFA ’08) have been selected as 2014 Artists in Action! at Girls’ Club. Each year, Girls’ Club invites four artists from their current exhibition – this year’s exhibition is I think it’s in my head, curated by the TM Sisters (Monica López De Victoria [BFA ’02] and Natasha López De Victoria) – to collaborate with the institution. With Girls’ Club, the artists create their own limited edition multiples and release them during their public talks. The talks are free and open to the public and provide a view into the processes and inspirations of contemporary artists like Gionta and Abe. Also, one of the main goals of the program is to offer affordable, original works by the artists for new collectors.

For her multiple, Gionta will create a collaborative storybook with Annik Adey-Babinski entitled One In The Same, which includes the 1930s hand-drawn portraits of women by her great aunt Frances Trinceri Malish, alongside Gionta’s virtual portraits of the same women. Gionta has decided to dedicate this project to the memory of Frances Trinceri Malish – who was also Gionta’s first art teacher – and her son John T. Malish. Abe, on the other hand, will create small paintings. The project is titled #usinterior. In this project Abe creates multiple landscape paintings of U.S. national parks in semi-traditional watercolor, just as the historical explorer has done as keepsake of his journey – in her case, however, her vicarious journey through Instagram. Usually, in her paintings, Abe emphasizes the idea of home as a state of mind and depicts semi-imaginary landscapes. Abe was an Adjunct Professor of Painting in the FIU Art + Art History Department, and she is now a Professor of Painting at Savannah College of Art and Design.

Sarah Michelle Rupert, Girls’ Club Gallery Director said, “…[T]he experience has been great. Harumi and AdrienneRose have been in the Girls’ Club collection for a while now and we are very excited to have this opportunity to work with them further to create a new, fun project and introduce their work to a wider audience.”

The following public talks will take place as part of the Girls’ Club Artists in Action! program. They will each occur at 7:00PM on Fridays.
