The Architecture Department is excited to welcome three exceptional new faculty members as we set sail for the Spring 2025 semester. Please join us in welcoming our latest Visiting Assistant Teaching Professors: Carlos Sarmiento, Daniela Atencio and Claudio Rossi.

Carlos Sarmiento studied at the University of Miami for his undergraduate degree and later attended graduate school at the Architectural Association in London, UK. He spent many years in New York City working on projects primarily in the Middle East and throughout the US. Carlos now runs his own practice in Miami and is excited to start his new journey at FIU’s School of Architecture.

He’s looking forward to helping students do great work and connecting with his colleagues.

Fun fact: Carlos enjoys making Kefir.

Daniela Atencio is an Architect and Master of Design Research in Emerging Systems, Technologies, and Media from SCI_Arc. She is an Associate Professor and researcher at the Universidad de Los Andes in Bogotá, where she coordinates computational design and robotic courses.

Daniela’s work explores advanced technologies in architecture and design, representation, computational design, and robotics in architecture (computer-controlled). Her work has been published and/or exhibited by the Venice Architecture Biennale, the International Association for Robots in Architecture, ACADIA, DigitalFutures, SIGraDi, Routledge, among others.

She is the author of the book Robotic Translations: Design Processes — Latin-America, which will be published by ACTAR this month.

Daniela looks forward to sharing and expanding the work done in South America (like a Worm-eye view drawing) with new colleagues and transdisciplinary approaches. She is also excited to get to know and work with FIU robots to prototype and build new research questions that extend the pedagogical capabilities of architecture.

Fun Fact: “Black and white, always. I am Claudio Rossi’s wife.”

Claudio Rossi is a Doctor in Architecture, Master in Urban Design, and Architect with more than 25 years of experience in architectural and urban projects, including the Central Coast of Venezuela Project after the Natural Disasters of 1999.

He has been awarded in various competitions and invited as a lecturer and visiting professor in Architecture, Urban Design, and Landscape Architecture at FIU and Politecnico di Torino.

Claudio has served as a Final Critic Reviewer at UPenn, MIT, and other prestigious institutions. He has also been a Workshop Professor at SCI_Arc, University of Melbourne, Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, Universidad Nacional de Córdoba, among others.

Currently, he is a visiting professor at Florida International University and an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Architecture and Design at Universidad de Los Andes, Colombia. Claudio’s work focuses on the contemporary responsibilities of architectural projects, their role in the Latin American landscape, and exploring technology to expand the narratives and agency of projects through representations.

Present research topics and projects include:

  • Architectural Anomalies
  • Bio-lent Architecture: Projectual Inflexions_Latin America
  • The Representation of the Latin American Landscape in Video Games

Claudio is looking forward to expanding the debate on design responsibilities and their impact in a context, especially in and for Latin America. He aims to build a network of narratives, questions, and conversations that activate strategies through technology, design research, and representation(s).

Fun Fact: “Black and white, always. I am Daniela Atencio’s husband.”

We are thrilled to have Carlos, Claudio, and Daniela bring their diverse expertise and passion to our community. Their contributions promise to inspire and enrich the academic and creative journey of our students and faculty alike. Here’s to an exciting and impactful Spring 2025 semester at FIU Architecture!
