Congratulations to Associate Professor Nick Gelpi!

Gelpi Projects @gelpiprojects completed the design of The Underline Stage Canopy, opening to the public on Wednesday, February 26th

The Underline Stage Canopy is a shade structure that consists of twelve posts coated green and six black sails of shade cloth. The site exists in the “Brickell Backyard”, which is part of Phase 1 of The Underline @theunderlinemia, between an open public plaza and a lushly planted butterfly garden. The structure spans over an existing elevated stage, connecting it with an audience occupying the plaza in front, and the butterfly garden to its rear. The forms of the shade sails open and close in a dynamic fluttering pattern mimicking the butterflies present on site.

The 12 posts create a field of elements to activate and help frame events which will occur throughout the year. The entire project could be considered a folly, which is one in a series of other interventions into the urban space, beneath the overhead transit line.
