An exhibition curated by College of Architecture + The Arts Assistant Professor Nick Gelpi, Jake Brillhart, Jean-Francois Lejeune, Terry Riley, and Allan Shulman opened on Friday, December 6th at the new Miami Center for Architecture & Design. Called DRAWN FROM MIAMI, the exhibition examines the city of Miami for its history of architecture, urban design, and landscape architecture. The drawings in the show derive inspiration from sources such as museum archives, private collectors, and even the personal collections of particular architects. DRAWN FROM MIAMI takes a look at the local, national, and international designers that helped shape the city that exists today. Interestingly, the architects and designers in the show have chosen to focus less on digital design. The drawings in the exhibition are done by hand, and they provide both participants and viewers with a view into the original designers’ creative process.

Included in DRAWN FROM MIAMI are works by Assistant Professor Nick Gelpi and Chair of the Department of Landscape Architecture Roberto Rovira. Gelpi’s Bending Table for the Wolfsonion-FIU lobby is the winning entry for the competition Six Components (and a handful of screws). The table is based on the Thonet 214 chair, and its design was done with the assistance of undergraduate students Monica Cordera, Claudia Fernandez, and Julia Sarduy. Additionally, Rovira displayed several of his sketches in the exhibition, including those for the Sky Lounge Courtyard at Florida International University, the Biscayne Landing Entrance at NE 143rd Avenue, and his “Miami Sunspars,” which won first place in the 2005 Miami Monument Design Competition. Images of Gelpi and Rovira’s work can be viewed in the gallery below.

DRAWN FROM MIAMI runs until February 7, 2014, at the Miami Center for Architecture & Design: 100 Northeast 1 Avenue, Miami, FL 33132
