Florida International University’s College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts (FIU CARTA) proudly highlights the participation of its distinguished faculty Prof. Dr. Thomas Spiegelhalter in the prestigious ARCASIA Forum 22, held in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Representing FIU on an international stage, the faculty member engaged with leading architects and thought leaders from 22 Asian countries and around the world to explore cutting-edge advancements in architectural design.

Themed “Polymathic Excellence: Crafting Narratives, Designing Tomorrows,” this year’s forum provided a platform to showcase AI-data-driven large-scale design and build projects featuring 3D-printed components. The FIU faculty member delivered a compelling presentation on awarded architectural and infrastructure projects that leverage additive manufacturing and AI-driven generative design, contributing to the ongoing discourse on the future of sustainable and resilient architecture.

The event brought together some of the world’s most esteemed architects, including Caroline Bos (UN Studio – Netherlands), David Mehta (MASS Design Group – USA), Onur Teke (TEKE Architects Office – Italy), Eran Chen (ODA – USA), Gurjit Singh Matharoo (Matharoo Associates – India), and other luminaries who are shaping the global architectural landscape. Their collective insights emphasized the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration, innovative design methodologies, and sustainable urban development strategies.

Throughout the forum, attendees engaged in dynamic workshops and discussions, examining how architecture can transcend traditional boundaries by integrating AI, 3D printing, and biomimetic principles to create resilient and impactful structures. The participation of FIU CARTA underscored the university’s commitment to pioneering new architectural approaches that bridge technological advancements with environmental responsibility.

The ARCASIA Forum, an annual gathering of top architects across Asia, serves as a critical space for fostering collaboration and addressing pressing challenges in architecture and urban development. Hosted this year by the Sri Lanka Institute of Architects, the event provided an invaluable opportunity for knowledge exchange and networking with global leaders in the field.

Reflecting on this extraordinary experience, FIU’s faculty member expressed deep appreciation for the warm welcome and enriching dialogues with colleagues from across Asia. The opportunity to present groundbreaking AI-integrated architectural solutions and engage in transformative discussions reaffirmed FIU CARTA’s position at the forefront of design innovation.

This participation aligns with FIU CARTA’s mission to advance architectural excellence through interdisciplinary research, international collaboration, and technological integration, ultimately shaping a more sustainable and resilient built environment for the future.
