On Thursday, November 14th, Jimenez Lai, Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago and founder of Bureau Spectacular, will lecture at the College of Architecture + The Arts. Lai will share with students and faculty his thoughts on four subject matters at the lecture, all of which relate to the cultural effects of composition and representation. “If content is an accumulative result of hard work (scars), and badge is an arrogant abuse of power (insignia),” said Lai, “I urge the former.”
Lai graduated from the University of Toronto with a Master of Architecture. He has worked for MOS, AVL, REX, and OMA/Rem Koolhaas in Rotterdam and New York. He has also lived and worked from a desert shelter in Taliesin, and as well taken up residence in a shipping container at Atelier Van Lieshout on the piers of Rotterdam. Some of his work is in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, and he was the 2012 winner of the Architectural League Prize for Young Architects. Lai has also published his first manifesto entitled Citizens of No Place through the Princeton Architectural Press and a grant from the Graham Foundation.
“Coffee, Scars, and Insignia” by Jimenez Lai will occur on Thursday, November 14th at the Paul L. Cejas School of Architecture Building, in Room 135, at 5PM.
