We are proud to highlight Hernan Guerrero Applewhite, an FIU School of Architecture M.Arch (’13) graduate and faculty member, as a key contributor to the Heritage at Risk Survey 2023, which received the prestigious 2024 Award for Excellence in Inventory/Survey. Hernan, founder of Geo-Urban Consulting, LLC, served as a subcontractor to the local architecture firm Shuman & Associates, leading efforts in community engagement.

Hernan’s team developed a comprehensive engagement plan and collaborated closely with the Miami-Dade County Communications team to craft and deliver impactful messaging. The project was commissioned by the Miami-Dade County Historic Preservation Department, part of the Regulatory and Economic Resources Department.

The survey notably followed guidance from the National Trust for Historic Preservation, ensuring the process prioritized the identification, survey, and designation of historic properties associated with underrepresented communities in the National Register of Historic Places and among National Historic Landmarks. Learn more about this guidance here.

As an educator in Urban Design Theory since 2018, Hernan also mentored two FIU alumni on the project team. Jay Molokwu, the first and only graduate of FIU’s Master of Urban Design program, credits Hernan’s Urban Design Theory course for inspiring her to pursue advanced studies. Ivo Rondinoni, a graduate of FIU Architecture and a current member of Miami-Dade County’s RER Department, attributes his career trajectory in planning and design to the same course.

This award celebrates the essential role of interdisciplinary collaboration and community engagement in preserving Miami-Dade County’s architectural heritage. Congratulations to Hernan and the entire team for this outstanding achievement!
