The FIU School of Architecture’s Design Discovery Program at South Beach (DD@SoBe) provides an intense and enjoyable introduction to architecture and the related disciplines of landscape and interior architecture.

Discover if architecture or a related design discipline are for you and get a head start on developing a portfolio. Participants in the Summer Design Career Discovery Program build an understanding and appreciation of architecture and design through studio design problems, lectures, and drawing exercises. Participation in the program will help you decide whether to pursue a professional design education.

The program is structured so that students participate in lectures, field trips, and hands-on studio work. Additionally, they will work with FIU’s design faculty to produce a design project that will become part of the application portfolio that all design programs require of their applicants.

Monday, June 8th through Friday, June 19th, 2015.
Program limited to 30 participants.
Tuition is $545

The program takes advantage of the rich cultural context of our studios on Miami Beach’s famous Lincoln Road, by using the city as a laboratory in which to study the relationships between design and the built environment. Participants spend a considerable portion of each day working on design projects, and engage in group discussions with faculty from FIU’s Department of Architecture.

Guest lectures by prominent local practitioners and visits to offices enhance the learning experience, and guided tours of significant local architecture and urban design projects demonstrate the impact of design on our world. While this program is designed for students of all ages, it will be of great benefit to those who plan to prepare a portfolio for admission to a professional program.

Students from the program, as well as family, friends and the community at large, will be able to see the architecture projects produced by the Summer Career Discovery students when they are on exhibition at our Lincoln Road Design Gallery, following the conclusion of the Summer Career Discovery program.

Student-participants will be in a stimulating design studio environment that mirrors both the academic studio experience and the professional arts and design sector environment. Participants will learn “design thinking” skills, creative problem solving, and learn to seek out creative solutions to challenges at a range of design scales. Studio teaching will encompass:

  • Short intensive design problems similar to those in first year design school
  • On-on-one guidance from instructors
  • Group discussion and reviews
  • Individual presentations to instructors and guest professionals

Applications for the program are due by April 20th, 2015. If you have any interest in the program and would like to get more details, please contact Professor David Rifkind at david.rifkind@fiu.edu.

A limited number of scholarships provided by The GrowLight Project, with funding from The College of Architecture + The Arts and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation
