The Villagers recently awarded more than $20,000 for college scholarships to deserving students with an interest in architectural historic preservation and restoration.
Seven students were selected from the field of applicants based on scholastic standing, recommendations, samples of their work, and statement of interest in preserving architectural past.
Alejandro Diaz was selected from Florida International University’s Department of Architecture. A junior, he described his childhood in Cuba as influencing his career choice. “I grew up with history. I am thankful for this award and the opportunity to get to know this incredible organization, The Villagers,” said Diaz. “The scholarship represents the first steps for me in the creation of a future project to support historical preservation.”
Toni Garcia and Joan Bounds were co-chairs of The Villagers scholarship selection committee. Committee members included Kathleen Bowker, Louise Bennett, and Barbara Moller.
