FIU Faculty and Students were Recipients at 2016 AIA Miami Design Awards Gala

On October 28, 2016 the AIA (American Institute of Architects) Design Awards Gala was held to celebrate architecture and design. The intention of the awards gala is to encourage excellence in architecture and its related fields, elevate appreciation of good design and recognize the work of local architects in the South Florida region.

The gala was held at the Little Haiti Cultural Center in Miami, FL and awards recipients, AIA members, sponsors and friends were in attendance. The event kicked-off at 6:30PM with a reception serving Caribbean hors d’oeuvre and delights followed by the awards presentation which featured FIU faculty and students as recipients.

Faculty member, Nick Gelpi along with his design firm, Gelpi Projects + STA Architects received by Merit Award for Divine Detail for design of the Exotic Concrete House and Gelpi Residence. Also, students part of the AIAS FIU Chapter received design awards including Matthew Wasala, a Honor Award for ZTower, Heidy Acevedo, a Merit Award for Bioenergetic Palafitic Network and Vikki Tou Liu as Student of the Year.

After the award presentation, the night continued with music, desserts and champagne to keep celebrating the architecture and design community that plays a significant role in Miami’s diverse culture.
