Facades+, Premier Conference on High Performance Building Enclosures will feature John Stuart and Marilys Nepomechie


On September 10th and 11th, 2015, The Architect’s Newspaper presents Facades+, the “leading conference on high performance and high design building skins,” at the Hyatt Regency.

Facades+ is the premier conference on high performance building enclosures. The conference will involve robust dialogue that covers all aspects of building envelopes and that is the key to building systems integration, resilient buildings and a sustainable built environment. Facades+, presented by The Architect’s Newspaper, is the 15th event in an ongoing series of conferences and forums that have unfolded in cities across the nation, including New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Dallas, and Chicago. The conference will have Symposium Featured Speakers, among them The FIU College of Architecture + The Arts’s own John Stuart, who is acting as the Facades+ Miami Co-Chair, and Marilys Nepomechie.

John Stuart, AIA, Associate Dean for Cultural and Community Engagement in the FIU College of Architecture + The Arts, executive director of the Miami Beach Urban Studios and tenured full-professor in architecture, is a practicing registered architect in the State of Florida. He is also an architectural historian and a visual artist involved in collaborative research projects with funding from Van Alen Institute, The National Endowment for the Arts, The National Science Foundation, The National Endowment for the Humanities, and The Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts. Stuart’s books include: The Gray Cloth, Paul Scheerbart’s Novel on Glass Architecture (MIT, 2001); Ely Jacques Kahn, Architect: Beaux-Arts to Modernism in New York (Norton, 2006, with Jewel Stern), and The New Deal in South Florida: Design, Policy and Community Building, 1933-1940 (University Press of Florida, 2008, with John F. Stack, Jr.). His publications have received a 2006 New York Book Award and a 2008 Silver Medal for Non-Fiction from the Florida Book Awards. Stuart holds advanced degrees in architecture and classical archaeology from Columbia and Princeton, and undergraduate degrees in classics and applied mathematics from Brown University. He has lectured and taught widely in the United States on architecture, urbanism, technology, and identity, and is currently working on a projects that point to new directions in interdisciplinary innovation and research.

Marilys Nepomechie, FAIA, is Associate Dean for Strategic Initiatives in the FIU College of Architecture + The Arts, an Architect and Professor of Architecture, and 2015-16 President of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (see CARTA News, July 2015). Her professional and academic projects –focused on urban resilience and on the design of sustainable, affordable housing and infrastructure– are included in the archives of the National Building Museum. They have been honored with over 40 design and research awards, national and international exhibition, and wide publication. As Principal Investigator, she has received grants from the U.S. Department of Energy; the Graham Foundation; the American Institute of Architects; the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation; and the 2nd International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam, where she has been an invited curator on the subject of coastal urban development. The National Science Foundation and Cejas Family Foundation fund her current research, focused on the effects of sea level rise in Miami, Florida. Nepomechie is an International CINTAS Fellow in Architecture, and co-curator of the exhibition MIAMI 2100: Envisioning a Resilient Second Century. She has served as Visiting Scholar in a number of national and international universities, and is most recently the author of Building Paradise: An Architectural Guide to the Magic City. She holds the Master of Architecture from MIT and has been inducted to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects.
