On Tuesday October 8, the Casa de Todos was awarded the Design and Social Action Award at the 9th Ibero-American Design Biennial held in Madrid at Matadero Madrid among 197 participating projects.

The Ibero-American Design Biennial brings together exemplary works in design from Spain, Portugal and the American continent from Mexico all the way to Chile. The recognition was selected through a jury process that included the Madrid Design Foundation (DIMAD) and its Advisory Committee, Gloria Escribano (ARG), Iván Cortés (COL), Fiorella Resenterra (C.RICA), Mariano Martín (ES), Pedro Cerisola (MX), Ana Paula Alatriste (MX) and Pepe Corzo (PE), the Madrid Designers Association and its Board of Directors.

The work is highlighted in the BID24 exhibition at Matadero Madrid, which opened its doors to the public on October 8. María Virginia Millán and Jaeson Montilla received the award in represention of the entire team that includes the Community of La Palomera, Enlace Fundación and Ciudad Laboratorio.

The Casa de Todos Annex is a place that has been transformed from a ruined and abandoned structure, together with the community of La Palomera since 2020. Around a central patio –full of plants, trees and a vegetable garden– culinary courses, dance, music, percussion, theater, cinema, storytelling, concerts, karate, modeling, directed tasks, mathematics courses, carpentry, how to make a garden, and much more are held. These are offered by 14 groups that include Gastroalquimia, Etarsis Art Academy, Tovar Studio Dance Academy, Getsemani Theater, Jabillo es Baruta Brotherhood, Liomart Dance Academy, Magawa Mode’s Modeling Academy and individual instructors. A library, in alliance with the Sopa de Letras Bookstore, has more than 2,000 copies on loan to the public, and chocolate making courses are taught regularly together with Cacao de Origen. This Hacienda La Trinidad Cultural Park project has been an invaluable ally.

Gratitude to the Baruta Mayor’s Office for opening this opportunity as well as the invaluable support of the Swiss Embassy in Venezuela, the French Embassy in Venezuela, AFIELD, the Graham Foundation, Roma Burgau, Across Design, Arup Group, Chamos, Ediciones Ekare, CAF development bank of Latin America and the Caribbean and private donations.
