On November 16th, the FIU chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) hosted their very first awards ceremony titled “Voces Del Periodismo” at the FIU Biscayne Bay Campus.
Journalism students from all over South Florida submitted their journalistic works in both Spanish and English to be evaluated by a panel of esteemed judges. The panel consisted of Professor Alejandro Alvarado, director of the Master of Journalism in Spanish at FIU; Adriana Mocciola, content director at Radio Caracol; Carla Angola, presenter of El Venezolano TV; René Pedrosa, investigative journalist of Radio Caracol and América TV; María Alesia Sosa and Mauricio Rodríguez, journalists of the digital edition of Univisión Noticias. The journalistic works evaluated came from a variety of topics, but fell into one of three categories: Photojournalism, Audiovisual Production, or Written Report.
During the awards ceremony, the award winners were acknowledged and the judges as well as other professional journalists offered their final comments and advice. The successful event was truly a ‘full house’ consisting of families, students, journalists and the full board of the South Florida NAHJ. Telemundo and CNN Anchors, Julio Vaqueiro and Jennifer Montoya, were also in attendance as well as the only Latin Artist finalist from American Idol, Michelle Susset, who concluded the evening with a performance.
“The Voces of Periodismo Award comes as a motivation for students to submit stories that are relevant, impactful, well-balanced and with a strong and clear narrative,” said Professor Alvarado. “Hopefully, this is only the beginning of an important tradition in awarding students.”
Most of the eight winning stories will be published with The Miami Herald, Univision online and the South Florida News Service.
