School of Architecture’s students sweep PSA video contest awards

Last January, the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) and the American Institute of Architects (AIA) launched a public service announcement video contest for architecture students that currently attend a Florida college/university. Students were tasked with the challenge of portraying the risk of using non-architects in building designs.

This year, all of the winning entries of the video contest organized by DBPR and AIA were awarded to FIU architecture students.

The grand prize of $500 went to  “Using a Licensed Architect” by Jaime Musgrave and Marcello Usbeck, and the two runner-up prizes of $250 were for “Have Common Sense” by Mauricio Caro and Kamilah Moorehead and “Hire a Licensed Professional” by Anna Drescher and Santiago Arroyave.

According to the DBPR’s website, the 30 second long video entries had to “inform the public of unlicensed architecture, as well as to illustrate the importance of using only licensed architects.”

The winning video will form part of DBPR public awareness campaign called “Unlicensed Activity” and the top videos will be featured on DBPR’s website and social media platforms.

DBPR’s main priority is to prevent unlicensed activity as the concern is that licensed architects will not find jobs due to this problematic and that consumers will be put at risk.
