On Monday, February 6th, FIU kicked-off the 2017 edition of Panther Alumni Week (PAW); a week long event that celebrates the personal and professional growth of our alumni.
Every year, FIU invites alumni to our campus to participate in discussions and exhibitions to promote student success and panther pride. The invitees engage with our students, by sharing career advice and that gives a professional insight on the industry. Both alumni and current students benefit from PAW, gaining valuable experiences that foster relationships and career paths.
This year, CARTA hosts a visual art exhibit at Miami Beach Urban Studios (MBUS) featuring artwork from alumni, Cristina Molina. Cristina holds a double major from FIU including a BFA in Studio Art from the Department of Art + Art History and BA in Psychology. She currently resides in New Orleans, Louisiana and works as Assistant Professor of New Media + Animation at Southeastern Louisiana University.
Cristina’s PAW exhibit entitled, The Matriarchs, is a compilation of still-life photographs, portraits, and cinematic imagery highlighting the pivotal role the women in her family play. Drawing aesthetic references from tribal culture and interjecting references to saints, deities, and mythical protagonists, the visual representations mimic a sect.
The vision behind ‘The Matriarchs’ draws inspiration from the maternal hierarchy, integrating the family dynamic with the female identity. Connecting both aspects, Cristina created a visual experience that displays connectivity, balance and tension; ultimately developing a celebration of women and femininity.
Cristina Molina’s PAW exhibit will run until March 10th at Miami Beach Urban Studios. An opening reception and artist discussion will be held on February 10th at 6pm. The event is open to public and free admission.
