Nick Gilmore Prints Downtown Miami Streets in ‘Paper Pavement’

During DWNTWN Art Days 2015, FIU Art + Art History alumnus and Adjunct Professor Nick Gilmore (FIU MFA ’14) will create blind-embossed paper impressions of Downtown Miami streets. He will exhibit these impressions as Paper Pavement at Turn-Based Press.

The following is a statement about the exhibition:

Paper Pavement tells a story of history and the future, the passage of time, the urban underfoot.

A steamroller navigates within the boundaries of a major commercial development zone, printing paper impressions of the streets along its path. Crumbling asphalt, utility covers, traffic signals, cement patchwork all characterize the area and its history in a way mostly ignored; easily disregarded. The impressions will tell the narrative of the place as it exists that very moment. A rutted road or cracked sidewalk takes on a different presence when transferred into a form embossed into paper. This Paper Pavement is displayed as a record and reflection of a city on the cusp of transformation. After the paper impressions of the Miami streets are made, Paper Pavement will be taken into Turn-Based Press for an evening exhibition opening. There will also be a satellite presentation of Paper Pavement at the Miami Center for Architecture & Design (MCAD) on the same day. MCAD is the DWNTWN Art Days 2015 hub and will be the Miami Downtown Development Authority‘s (Miami DDA) headquarters during DWNTWN Art Days this year. The annual Art Days, which is in its fourth year, is a collaboration between the Miami Downtown Development Authority and the cultural spaces and artists residing in Downtown Miami. (Source)
