Nick Gelpi on “Practicing PRACTICE”

“Practicing PRACTICE” will be the closing lecture of the semester by Professor Nick Gelpi on Thursday, April 11, at Paul L. Cejas building room 135 at 5:00pm. It will be demonstrated that design is as much about the built work as it is about testing the potential of materials. The lecture will reflect his recent work and current research after his first year as faculty at FIU.

Gelpi will address students on how he approaches projects and designs, as well as discuss new ways of testing work, and constructing with a dress rehearsal in mind. Professor Gelpi encourages students to approach their work as a practice run for the final event. “I hope students will be convinced to consider which materials they select more thoughtfully, and look for the new found potentials in matter itself” Gelpi said.

Gelpi is the Founder and design Principle of GELPI PROJECTS / PALEO STUDIO based in New York. The focus of his studio is to develop new materials and techniques for building concepts. He has produced a diversity of projects from experimental structures and pavilions, to commercial retail design, and high-concept furniture and prototypes.
