MUNDANEUM Conference: Serving as academic resource for architecture students

MUNDANEUM 2013: International Architecture Conference, hosted FIU Professor Thomas Spiegelhalter as a speaker and panelist in the colonial city of Granada, Nicaragua from June 13-15, 2013. This year’s MUNDANEUM conference was titled “ARQUITECTURA NECESARIA” and it celebrated its eighth session by focusing on the topic “Environmentally Responsible Design, Affordability and Positive User Feedbacks.”

MUNDANEUM is an architectural conference held every two years since 1999 in the Neotropics (Central and South America). It was founded in Costa Rica in 1993 by FundARQ, a Costa Rican Foundation of Design Art & Architecture, and since then more than 100 speakers from all over the world have met to discuss an array of architecture topics. One of the main goals of the conference is to serve as complementary training for architecture students in Latin-American countries.

Since 2003, Professor Spiegelhalter has been invited three times to participate in MUNDANEUM. Spiegelhalter’s lecture, “Micro-Climate Sensitive Carbon Neutral Architecture in the Neotropics – Cases Studies and Experiments” used examples to establish a set of the best practices for carbon neutral buildings in tropical climates.

The panel discussion was led and published by Guillermo Honles (Co-founder of MUNDANEUM and Professor of Architecture at Woodbury University, Los Angeles), Clifford Pearson (Chief Editor of Architectural Record, New York City), and Kathy MacDonald (Editorial Director, Revista Domus_América Central y el Caribe).
