This summer, FIU Theatre will host the Latinx Theatre Commons Regional Convening (“Miami in Motion!”) July 12-14, 2019.
Miami in Motion! will gather artists, scholars, administrators, and advocates from the Miami Latinx Theater community and beyond to share work and methodologies, and to experience the vibrant and varied forms of storytelling illuminating the abundant creative talent of this rapidly growing “Magic City.”
The Convening will also provide space for networking and interdisciplinary collaborative opportunities, and engage in dialogue aimed at advancing career sustainability and engendering an ecosystem for artists to thrive in all stages of life.
The Convening consists of a series of panels, breakout sessions, cafecitos, performances, and site visits to Miami Latinx theatres.
The Convening will also coincide with the opening weekend of Teatro Avante’s 34th International Hispanic Theatre Festival of Miami.
The Latinx Theatre Commons (LTC) is a national movement that uses a commons-based approach to transform the narrative of the American theatre, to amplify the visibility of Latinx performance making, and to champion equity through advocacy, art making, convening, and scholarship.
FIU Theatre alumna, Adriana Gaviria, is on the LTC Steering Committee and is the champion and lead producer of the event.
“I am thrilled to be coming back to Miami to partner with my alma mater for the first Latinx Regional Convening in Miami,” says Gaviria, “I am deeply grateful for the ongoing support of Chair and Artistic Director Joel Murray and the rest of the faculty and staff.”
“Centered in the only major American city founded by a woman and known as a gateway to Latin America and the Caribbean, Miami in Motion! seeks to bring the Miami Latinx theater community together to connect and reflect upon our histories. The goal of the convening is to look forward toward the future as active participants in the creative economy, as a recognized incubator of talent, and as a community who continues to push the boundaries of innovation and creativity.”
Professor Lesley-Ann Timlick serves as FIU Host Committee Chair for the event, and Professor Wayne Robinson, Professor Michael Yawney, and Instructor and Director of Audience Development Ivan Lopez serve as FIU Host Committee Members.
Space is limited. If you would like to attend Miami in Motion!, please RSVP here.
