Kopenhaver Named a Trailblazer in Diversity

Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver, Dean Emeritus and Professor and Executive Director of the Kopenhaver Center for the Advancement of Communication at Florida International University, School of  Communication + Journalism, is one of four women who are the focus of an award-winning paper, “Madame President as Mover and Shaker for Journalism Diversity: Leadership Approaches by AEJMC’s Female Trailblazers,” by George L. Daniels, assistant dean in the College of Communication & Information Sciences at The University of Alabama.

The paper is part of a symposium sponsored by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication at the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Oklahoma in March.

Daniels’ paper examines the role of gender in diversity leadership and journalism education through oral history, recording the experiences of four past female presidents of AEJMC: Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver (1999), Florida International University; Jannette Dates (2004), Howard University; Barbara Hines (2009), Howard University; and Paula Poindexter (2014), the University of Texas at Austin.

Kopenhaver was named one of AEJMC’s Trailblazers in Diversity and interviewed for an oral history which is maintained in the archives of the organization in Columbia, South Carolina.
