INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE ALUMNI RECEIVE 2018-2019 NEWH GREEN VOICE DESIGN SCHOLARSHIP

Recent alumni from the Department of Interior Architecture, Brennan Broome and Raquel Raney, were selected as the 2018-2019 recipients of the NEWH Green Voice Design Competition. This annual competition is hosted by premier hospitality network, NEWH Inc., and provides students with the opportunity to showcase their design skills while utilizing the very best in sustainable design products and practices.

Both students majored in Interior Architecture and graduated this past spring semester. The pair’s winning project was selected by a group of distinguished judges from renown global, design firms and consisted of an adaptive reuse hotel incorporating LEED certified practices and recycled shipping containers.

Broome and Raney were awarded a $7,500 scholarship and each received paid travel and lodging to the award ceremony reception held during at the HD Expo in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Project Description:

The Hayden Flour Mill is one of Tempe and Arizona’s oldest and most storied landmarks. As it stands today, the Hayden Flour Mill remains the oldest cast-in-place, reinforced concrete building in Tempe, Arizona — a relic of Tempe’s agricultural past. The re-contextualization of the mill builds on the contrast between old and new, while highlighting the structural logic of the original building. The former industrial-use building has been transformed into a modern-age gathering space for locals and visitors alike, while paying homage to its past.

The addition of eight 8’ x 40’ recycled shipping containers, bisected in half, to the building’s north side, provides 16 additional guest suites in a unique setting.
