Alumna Leads First Annual FIU x UF Design Student Charette

Tricia Keffer, FIU Landscape Architecture + Environmental and Urban Design alumna recently led a first annual design charette between students from Florida International University (FIU) and the University of Florida (UF).

A charette is defined as the intense final effort made by architectural students to complete their solutions to a given architectural problem in an allotted time or the period in which such an effort is made.

FIU and UF students participated in the first annual university student charrette at the ASLA Common Ground Conference in Orlando 2019. The theme was to create an imaginary water park on the Big Island of Hawaii. An FIU student commented, “This was the most FUN class ever at a Florida conference”. The creative energy was contagious as members from the Fellows committee served on the jury and commented on the great teamwork and engagement by all of the students.

Students only had an hour and a half to present a winning design. All the submitted projects were innovative and inspiring as the students incorporated the cultural landscape of the Big Island volcano’s into an inclusive waterscape for natives peoples, locals, and visitors alike.

The charette was sponsored by Anova Furnishings and MAL Emerging Professionals Chair Tricia Keffer

“…In the landscape architecture (industry), we like to promote diversity, acceptance, and collaboration. I think the students from both schools left with a new appreciation, friendships, and understanding.”
