“I am extremely honored and humbled to receive such an important recognition from the state of Texas. I have faced challenges on my way here, but each of them have only strengthened my passion for journalism. I have met incredible people during my time in South Texas and learned about the immigration crisis. I have covered other issues, such as border corruption and the challenges young children in detention centers face,” said Huertas

“I began my career interning at several TV stations in Miami before I got my first TV job as a writer for WSVN in Miami. A year later, I became a reporter and a fill-in anchor at WJHG in Panama City Beach, Fla and then I took a position at KGBT in the Rio Grande Valley. I am proud to be a bilingual journalist who can reach the Hispanic community. I sincerely thank my family, friends, mentors, co-workers, FIU professors and staff, NAHJ and everyone who has helped me along the way.”
