FIU alum talks broadcast journalism and digital media

As broadcast and digital media seniors get ready to graduate in a couple months, they are working hard on their capstone projects. In just eight weeks, students must choose a topic and produce a 30-minute long show to be displayed in a website with content, such as infographics and maps.

The group is working together to create a piece on climate change. For one of the show segments, FIU alumnus Luis Rodriguez, ‘12 and Key Biscayne Mayor Mayra Peña Lindsay joined to speak about the topic during Panther Alumni Week (PAW).

The class is currently taught by Professor Lilliam Martinez-Bustos and Michael Scott Sheerin and includes the capstones for Digital Media Studies, Broadcast Journalism and TV Production.

“From a very early age, I watched shows, commercials and news programs to see how I could make them better. Now, when I analyze them, I see that this is content-driven media and that you have to make sure the content you create is diversified and relevant,” said Rodriguez.
