(De) Space by Gardner Cole Miller opens at Bakehouse Art Complex

On Saturday, August 1st, (De) Space by alumnus Gardner Cole Miller (FIU MFA ’14) opens in the FIU Art + Art History: Project Room at the Bakehouse Art Complex. The exhibit is curated by Brittni Winkler, a candidate of the Master of Fine Arts in Visual Arts: Curatorial Practice Track.

(De) Space is part of Miller’s artist residency at the Bakehouse Art Complex. The exhibit features works in fibers and mixed-media installation that explore the resulting translations of cultures and peoples interacting across time and space, as well as the enduring aftermath of those histories.

Gardner Cole Miller is a Miami-based, multi-media artist who, as a point of departure, draws upon his experiences growing up amid the worlds of a U.S. military base situated on a postcolonial Bahamian out-island. Miller has participated in various exhibitions across South Florida, and his work resides in several public and private collections. In 2014, he received his MFA from Florida International University.

Miller’s (De) Space will be displayed in the FIU Art + Art History: Project Room, which will function alternatively as a space for experimental curating, site-specific installations, and short-term artist residencies for current students and alumni of FIU’s Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Visual Arts in Fine Arts (curatorial and studio tracks) programs, under the supervision of FIU Art + Art History departmental faculty.

The Bakehouse Art Complex (BAC) is an incubator for artistic creativity featuring dozens of artists working side-by-side in every medium imaginable. In 1986, long before Wynwood was the place to be on the Second Saturdays for the monthly art walk (before it had any galleries at all) a group of artists transformed an abandoned bakery built in the 1920s and founded the non-profit Bakehouse Art Complex.

(De) Space will open on Saturday, August 1st, 2015 at 7PM with an opening reception in the FIU Art + Art History: Project Room at the Bakehouse Art Complex: 561 NW 32nd Street, Miami, Florida 33127. For more information, call at (305) 576-2828.
