A+AH Alumna to Exhibit Work at the Florence Biennale

IMG_0270College of Architecture + The Arts alumna Silvinia Barrera (’02), who has been living in Mallorca, Spain, will exhibit her work at the Florence Biennale. The international event – sponsored by the President of the Republic and Ministry of Cultural Heritage of Italy and the Regional, Provincial, and Municipal authorities of the City of Florence – provides contemporary artists with the opportunity to showcase their work at the Fortezza da Basso.

Barrera usually depicts faces in her work, whether they are those of friends or family. For the Florence Biennale, however, she will depict the face of Jesus Christ, a face deemed holy. “…[I decided] to work on the face of Jesus Christ based on the image of the [Shroud of Turin],” said Barrera. “Then, I completed it with two more images: God the Creator and the Holy Spirit.” Regarding her choice of painting as a medium, Barerra said, “It has to do with the intimate exploration of metaphysical content through form…through color, even when monochromatic.”

Silvina Barrera will exhibit her work at the Florence Biennale from November 30th to December 8th. For more information on Silvinia Barrera, visit her website. For more information on the Florence Biennale, click here.
